Castello Brolo Barone Ricasoli

Barona Ricasoli
The Ricasoli family has been growing wine since 1141 and Brolio is considered the oldest winery in Italy, always family owned. During the same period, the family acquired the mighty, fortified Castello di Brolio, perched visibly on a hill near Gaiole. The Baron Bettino Ricasoli (1809-1880), called the "Iron Baron", was a wise and far-sighted man with great interest in agriculture and viticulture; After studying and traveling to France in 1872, he developed the "formula" for modern Chianti, the combination of Sangiovese, Canaiolo and then Malvasia. This was virtually legal until the reorganization of the DOC for the Chianti Classico in the 1990s. After turbulent times took over in 1993, the 32nd BaronRicasoli, Francesco Ricasoli, restored the fortunes of the winery and took it back to Phalanx, the absolute top Tuscan producer. Today the estate covers 230 hectares in prime locations of Gaiole and Castelnuovo Berardino.
